From 2010 the charity Det Åpne Teater will change into Dramatikkens Hus, which will be the national center for the development of new writing for the stage. Marit Solbu leads the center with Jon Tombre as the artistic director for the stage, and Kai Johnsen as the artistic director for the literary deparment.
History:
Det Åpne Teater was founded in 1986 by Anne-May Nilsen and is situated in a refurbished brick factory and forge, on Grønland in Oslo.
Det Åpne Teater offers dramaturgical advice to playwrights as well as initiates and supports writers groups. The number and quality of scripts which Det Åpne Teater receives indicates a new wave of Norwegian playwrights emerging. In addition to the continuous development work, Det Åpne Teater is dedicated to presenting a new generation of playwrights on stage.
The theatre co-produces a small number of plays every year, and also hosts numerous performances by visiting companies. As Det Åpne Teater is a gateway into the Norwegian theatre landscape – the new generation of playwrights will over the next years gradually become visible on the more established stages.
Forming international relationships and introducing Norwegian writers to international colleagues and their work, is an integral part of Det Åpne Teater’s strategy.
The theatre has conducted a series of international playwright collaborations, involving countries as Russia, Serbia, UK and Denmark. The theatre currently collaborates with international partners such as Artistas Unidos (Portugal), Traverse Theatre (Scotland), Aalborg Teater (DK), Serbian National Theatre, Lin Zhaohua Drama Studio (China), Oslo/elsewhere/New Georges Theatre (USA), Nazikambe, (Malawi), Kazantsev Centre for Drama and Staging (Moscow) and others.
Det Åpne Teater received a Fringe First award 2001 for its production of "Like thunder" by Niels Fredrik Dahl, directed by Franzisca Aarflot, and the Ibsen Prize 2002 for the same play and the theatre's work for new Norwegian playwriting. Wetle Holtan also received the Ibsen prize for his play ”Those who live” in 2003, which was developed and produced at Det Åpne Teater. Det Åpne Teater has also received two Hedda nominations.
Det Åpne Teater in collaboration with Artistas Unidos og EPAOE Chapito received Espetaculo de honra 2007 (Best performance in the festival, voted by the audience) at The Almada International Theatre festival 2006 for the production of "Littlewoods" by Jesper Halle.
Det Åpne Teater is supported by The Norwegian Arts Council and the Municipal of Oslo.
